On November 7, government officials, business leaders, and media executives will gather in Bayelsa State for the 20th All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC). The event will bring together key stakeholders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and Nduka Obaigbena, Chairman/Editor-In-Chief of Thisday/Arise Media Group, who will chair the conference. Notable media figures like Uncle Sam Amuka, founder of Vanguard Newspaper, are also expected to attend.
According to a statement from Eze Anaba, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), and General Secretary Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, the conference will address crucial topics, such as sustainable media financing and the impact of AI in journalism. Speakers, including former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba and BusinessDay Publisher Frank Aigbogun, will lead discussions on challenges and opportunities facing the media industry in Nigeria.
The NGE explained that, since May 2023, the current administration has implemented significant reforms aimed at stabilizing Nigeria’s macroeconomic situation, including the removal of petrol subsidies and unification of foreign exchange rates. To ease inflation’s impact on vulnerable populations, the government has initiated cash transfer programs targeting over 15 million households, while also working to strengthen the Central Bank’s focus on price stability.
Despite these measures, Nigeria faces persistent challenges. With an estimated poverty rate of 40%, 88 million Nigerians live below the poverty line, while rising inflation, currency exchange rates, and energy costs remain pressing concerns. The conference’s theme, “Economic Growth and Development Strategies in a Resource-Rich Country,” will explore strategies for addressing both short-term and long-term economic issues in Nigeria.
Additionally, the conference will examine media viability, with a focus on mechanisms to ensure fair compensation for media intellectual property and content. As traditional revenue streams diminish, industry leaders are advocating for diversified revenue opportunities that adapt to changing market dynamics.
The NGE hopes that ANEC 2024 will foster actionable strategies to tackle Nigeria’s economic and media challenges, promoting sustainable development and resilience in the nation’s press and economy.
