The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced plans to harmonize court martial procedures across military services to align with Nigeria’s justice system.
This was disclosed by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, at the opening of a conference titled Rules of Procedure, Substance Abuse, and Sexual Orientation in the Armed Forces of Nigeria held in Abuja on December 16, 2024. Represented by Rear Admiral Monday Unurhere, Chief of Defence Administration, Gen. Musa highlighted the need to address administrative challenges affecting military discipline and effectiveness.
“Discipline is the cornerstone of military operations,” he stated. “Harmonizing court martial rules will eliminate inconsistencies arising from fragmented and outdated procedures across the services.”
The conference also addressed the impact of substance abuse and homosexuality within the military. Musa emphasized the negative effects of these issues on morale and operational efficiency, calling for a unified approach to strengthen justice and discipline.
The DHQ expressed optimism that the event would provide actionable solutions to improve the Nigerian Armed Forces’ judicial and disciplinary frameworks.
