A Federal High Court in Kano, led by Justice Simon A. Amobeda, has once again denied an application seeking to halt the Kano State local government elections set for October 26. The request was filed by the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and Muhammad Babayo against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KSIEC), the Inspector General of Police, and the Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS).
The plaintiffs sought to stop the elections pending the resolution of a motion on notice. However, Justice Amobeda declined the request and ordered the respondents to be notified to present reasons why the election should not proceed. The court also set a hearing for October 16, 2024, with a 72-hour deadline for responses from all parties.
Earlier, the court had similarly rejected a petition by Aminu Aliyu Tilga and the All Progressives Congress (APC) seeking to block the same election.
