Nigerian singer CKay has stirred conversation online by introducing a new subgenre of Afrobeat, which he calls “Emo Afrobeat.” In a recent tweet, the artist took credit for pioneering this style, which blends emotional depth with Afrobeat rhythms, claiming it has influenced many artists today.
CKay expressed his thoughts on social media, writing, “ckay IS the first. I pioneered many vibes Afrobeat artists thrive off today…y’all laughed when I came up with emo afrobeat, but many are now doing the same, calling it ridiculous names (and making $$). You’re welcome.”
His statement has added fuel to the ongoing debate within the Afrobeat community, where many musicians are re-evaluating their place in the genre. Earlier this year, Wizkid and Flavour also distanced themselves from being labeled as Afrobeat artists, sparking backlash from fans.
The controversy continued after the recent VMA Awards when Nigerian radio personality Do2dtun criticized South African singer Tyla for accepting the Best Afrobeat Artist award. He argued that as an Amapiano singer, Tyla did not deserve the Afrobeat recognition, suggesting Nigerian artists were allowing others to dominate the genre.
CKay’s claim to the “Emo Afrobeat” label adds another layer to the conversation about the future and evolution of Afrobeat, as the genre continues to grow globally.
