In anticipation of increased water traffic during the Yuletide season, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has begun clearing water hyacinths from key Lagos water channels. The initiative, aimed at improving navigation and safety, is focused on major routes with heavy boat traffic, beginning with Omu Creeks and Ikorodu Water Channels.
Sarat Braimah, the Lagos Area Manager of NIWA, stated that while the Omu Creeks have already been cleared, intensive work on the Ikorodu channels will continue for at least another week. This includes removing waste and invasive water plants.
With the holiday season expected to bring a rise in boat traffic, Braimah emphasized the importance of this clearance to ensure smooth and safe operations for boat operators. Additionally, the project will extend to Badagry and Apapa channels, with the Ikorodu channel being prioritized due to its impact on coastal communities.
NIWA is committed to maintaining safe waterways throughout the season, with river marshals on duty to monitor boating activities.
