The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced plans to halt the recruitment efforts of the newly identified terrorist group, Lukarawa, which operates in Sokoto and Kebbi states. The military, in coordination with other security agencies and local governments, is working to disrupt the group’s efforts to recruit new members.
Lukarawa, which emerged after the Niger coup, has reportedly been enticing local youth with welfare packages and sermons. The group also uses social media to expand its reach. The DHQ has acknowledged the threat posed by this group but reassured the public that they are actively monitoring and countering its activities.
Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, the Director of Media Operations at DHQ, noted that despite the group’s low numbers, its attempts to recruit could pose challenges. He emphasized the importance of community involvement in reporting suspicious activities.
Security experts and former officials suggest that while the group has been in existence since 2018, it has not yet reached a level of significant national threat. However, the call for heightened intelligence efforts and community support remains strong to prevent further escalation.
