Vice President Kashim Shettima has officially inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC), urging its members to adopt global best practices to minimize traffic accidents in Nigeria. The council is tasked with establishing National Road Safety Strategy targets and ensuring effective collaboration among federal, state, and local governments.
During the inauguration at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Shettima emphasized the importance of road safety, describing it as a crucial lifeline for the nation’s citizens. He commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for developing a robust strategy to tackle road traffic issues, even in its short history.
The establishment of NaRSAC responds to recommendations from the World Bank Country Capacity Review, which highlighted areas for improvement in Nigeria’s road traffic management. Shettima urged the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to use these recommendations as a catalyst for necessary reforms in the sector.
The Vice President praised the collaboration between federal and state executives and various government agencies, underscoring that unity is essential for the common good. He reiterated that this initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthen administrative capacities within government bodies.
In his remarks, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, who also serves as the secretary of NaRSAC, noted that the council’s formation marks a significant step toward improving road safety management in Nigeria. He highlighted the Nigeria Road Safety Strategy (NRSS) as the country’s response to the need for safer road usage, emphasizing the goal of reducing road traffic fatalities to zero.
NaRSAC will be chaired by Vice President Shettima and includes representatives from six governors, various federal ministers, and key organizations such as the National Security Adviser, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), and the Nigerian Society of Engineers.
