Between July 10 and December 9, 2024, a total of 129,417 Boko Haram terrorists and their families surrendered to security forces in Nigeria. This includes 30,426 fighters, 36,774 women, and 62,265 children.
General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS), shared this information at the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference in Doha, Qatar. He highlighted that this achievement was part of the ongoing efforts to foster a peaceful society, which is critical for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
Musa attributed the success to a comprehensive approach combining both kinetic (military) and non-kinetic (community engagement) strategies. He stressed that these efforts have stabilized communities and created an environment conducive to progress.
The CDS also pointed to the Armed Forces’ role in boosting oil production, reducing attacks on vulnerable communities, and enhancing overall stability. He emphasized that despite ongoing challenges, significant progress has been made since June 2023.
In his address, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), former Chief of Naval Staff, discussed the role of purposeful leadership in securing positive change in security efforts. Additionally, Major General Adamu Laka provided an update on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism efforts, noting the progress in prosecuting terrorists and reclaiming territories from Boko Haram and ISWAP.
