President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of accurate identity verification in ensuring access to essential services and welfare programs for Nigerian citizens. Speaking at the National Day of Identity event organized by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, highlighted that without proper identification, the government’s ability to provide necessary services and protection is hindered.
Tinubu stressed that Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) is crucial for the delivery of essential services such as healthcare, education, and social welfare. He noted that a reliable digital identity system is key to the administration’s 8-point agenda, which includes poverty reduction, job creation, and economic growth.
He pointed out that initiatives such as farmer incentives, student loans, and housing programs rely heavily on digital identity systems to ensure that services reach those in need. Tinubu also highlighted the role of digital identity in promoting transparency, economic transactions, and inclusive development.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji Ojo, echoed the president’s sentiment, adding that identity management is critical for distinguishing law-abiding citizens from wrongdoers and for enhancing Nigeria’s global reputation. He stressed the importance of protecting citizens’ data under the Data Protection Act while balancing security and identity management.
The event underscored the need for verifiable identities to enhance governance and drive sustainable development in Nigeria.
