Nigerian singer Portable has stirred controversy with his recent comments on late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and rapper Zlatan Ibile. In a provocative interview on the Echoo Room podcast with Quincy Jonze, Portable criticized Fela for his activism, suggesting that it contributed to his early death.
Portable claimed that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, known for his passionate fight for Nigerian rights and social justice, could have lived longer had he “minded his business.” He argued that Fela’s dedication to activism led to his premature death.
“According to what we were told, if Fela had minded his business a little, he would have lived longer. But he was busy fighting for Nigerians who did not fight for themselves,” Portable said.
The interview also touched on Portable’s feud with Zlatan Ibile. Portable accused Zlatan of being the “devil” behind his falling out with Afrobeats star Davido. He claimed that his issues with Davido began only after Zlatan became involved.
“I was in America looking for foreign artists. I was busy displaying my madness online when Davido called me. Me and Davido did not quarrel until the devil Zlatan came,” Portable added.
