The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Frontiers have expressed approval of a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that halted the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from disbursing monthly allocations to the Rivers State Government. The court order, issued by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, deemed the management of state funds by Governor Siminalayi Fubara since January 2024 as a “constitutional somersault and aberration,” and highlighted the unconstitutionality of presenting the state budget to only four members of the Rivers House of Assembly.
Henry Owolabi, the national coordinator for PDP Youth Frontiers, praised the judiciary for upholding democratic standards and urged the PDP to provide political guidance to restore proper legislative functions in the Rivers Assembly. He also demanded that previous decisions by the four-member Assembly be overturned immediately.
“We call on the PDP to guide the Rivers State House of Assembly in rectifying governance errors and in re-evaluating the 2024 budget to prevent hardship for Rivers citizens,” Owolabi stated. He further requested that illegally spent funds be traced and refunded by Governor Fubara to maintain accountability in state affairs.
This ruling marks a significant moment in Rivers’ political landscape as the PDP Youth Frontiers emphasize the need for constitutional adherence and financial transparency.
