The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) of scheming to use the Amotekun Corps, a regional security outfit, to influence the upcoming November 16 governorship election. The PDP raised concerns following the appointment of Amotekun Corps Commander, Akogun Adetunji Adeleye, as the Chair of the Security Committee for the APC campaign council in Ondo.
In a statement issued by Ayo Fadaka, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the PDP’s governorship candidate, the party condemned the alleged plans, describing it as an attempt to use state security forces to intimidate voters. Fadaka further claimed that “barracks” had been set up to house thugs across the state, with details to be shared with law enforcement.
The APC quickly refuted these claims, stating that Adeleye was not part of their campaign council, and emphasized that Amotekun is a neutral security outfit focused solely on public safety. Steve Otaloro, Director of Media and Publicity for the APC, dismissed the PDP’s accusations as baseless, asserting that the PDP was merely deflecting from its own lack of readiness for the election.
As the Ondo election approaches, both parties have called on security agencies to investigate these allegations and ensure a safe electoral process.
