Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has strongly criticized the anti-Yoruba comments made by a Canadian woman, branding them as extreme bigotry. Obi emphasized that such divisive remarks are harmful and should be universally condemned.
In a statement on X, Obi declared, “I firmly denounce the hateful statements and actions attributed to an individual supposedly of Igbo descent residing in Canada against Yoruba or Benin communities. Such behavior has no place in our society.”
He continued, “As Nigerians, our focus should be on overcoming our common challenges rather than letting tribalism and animosity divide us. What does tribal bigotry accomplish? Does it alleviate poverty, lower the prices of essential goods, improve transportation, enhance electricity supply, or ensure good governance? The answer is a definite no.”
Obi urged for a shift in priorities, advocating for a united effort to advance Nigeria irrespective of ethnic backgrounds. “Our goal should be progress for Nigeria. We need capable leaders who can guide the country effectively and improve the lives of all citizens. The ethnicity of the plane’s pilot or bus driver is irrelevant; what matters is effective leadership.”
He concluded by calling for a collective focus on building a prosperous, united, and equitable Nigeria. “We must reject tribalism and embrace our common humanity to achieve a better Nigeria for everyone.”
