The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing court judgements, particularly those related to environmental and social justice, in the Niger Delta region. This pledge highlights the government’s recognition of the critical need for environmental justice to foster sustainable development and ensure peace in the region.
Speaking at an interactive session on “Stakeholders’ Capacity to Enforce Court Judgements in Nigeria,” organized by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) in Port Harcourt, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, emphasized that such judgements would serve as a testament to the government’s dedication to justice. Fagbemi, represented by Adaeze Udeji from the Ministry of Justice, stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, civil society organizations, and local communities to achieve this goal.
Fagbemi also urged stakeholders to advocate for the enforcement of court judgements, fair compensation, and social welfare, underscoring that justice must be a reality, not just an ideal.
In his remarks, the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Anthony Ojukwu, highlighted the severe environmental and health impacts oil exploration has had on the Niger Delta. Represented by Rabi Anwar, the NHRC’s Director of Legal Services and Enforcement, Ojukwu called for unified action to ensure the full enforcement of decisions and judgements that promote justice in the region.
Ojukwu also acknowledged the devastating effects of oil spills on local livelihoods, particularly fishing and farming, which are essential to the region’s economy. He commended SERAP’s ongoing efforts to uphold social justice and human rights in the Niger Delta, urging further collaboration with stakeholders such as the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Environmental Rights Action (ERA).
The discussions underscored the importance of a robust legal framework to address the region’s environmental and social challenges and to ensure that justice is upheld for affected communities.
