Renowned gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey has lodged a formal petition with the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, urging an investigation and legal action against four individuals for defamation.
The controversy emerged after certain social media users alleged a resemblance between the child of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and Nathaniel Bassey. The unfounded claims circulated widely online, prompting Bassey to pursue legal recourse against those responsible.
On April 1, 2024, Nathaniel Bassey, through his legal representatives Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye, and Anthony Abia, submitted the petition to the IGP, seeking swift action against the accused parties.
The petition specifically targets four social media users—Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and DJ Spoiltkid—who propagated the false allegations.
In the petition, Bassey’s attorneys emphasized his status as a respected gospel music minister, whose contributions have positively impacted countless individuals globally. They called for prompt investigation and appropriate legal measures to address the defamation.
The petition further emphasized the gravity of the false claims, which not only tarnished Bassey’s reputation but also caused significant distress and harm.
Bassey’s legal team urged the police to expedite the investigation and ensure that justice is served in the matter.
