Prof. Yakubu Mahmood, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), confirmed on Tuesday that the mock accreditation process in Benin, Edo State, was successful, underscoring INEC’s commitment to a transparent and credible governorship election in the state.
Mahmood visited Egor, Ikpoba Okha, and Oredo Local Government Areas to assess preparations for the upcoming election, scheduled to take place in 11 days. He observed the mock accreditation at two centers, noting that the commission is fully prepared for the election.
In a press briefing, Mahmood assured that INEC’s technology and materials for the election are in excellent condition. “This visit was aimed at assessing our readiness and the effectiveness of our systems for voter registration and results transmission to the IREV portal. Everything is in perfect condition,” he said.
Mahmood emphasized that INEC’s role is to facilitate the election, not to endorse any candidate or party. He urged the electorate to vote for their preferred candidates, assuring them that INEC will protect the integrity of their choices.
He also called on all stakeholders, including security agencies, political parties, candidates, observers, and the media, to contribute to a smooth and successful election process. Mahmood reassured that sufficient equipment and systems are in place to ensure a reliable election, emphasizing that the mock exercise’s equipment will not be reused.
“This is an off-cycle election, and we have enough systems to ensure the integrity of the process,” he added.
