Nollywood actress Biola Bayo, known professionally as Abiola Adebayo, has shared how dropping out of secondary school significantly altered her perspective on life. In an interview with Seun Oloketuyi for Nollywood On Radio, Bayo discussed the impact her educational struggles had on her personal growth and career.
Despite her passion for education, Bayo faced numerous challenges during her schooling years, including financial constraints that led her to turn down several admissions. Despite these setbacks, she remained determined and persistent.
Bayo explained, “For me, education has always been a key focus. I was a secondary school dropout, so my pursuit of education was very intentional. It was challenging to go to school, and I had to decline several admissions due to lack of funds. However, I never stopped striving for more.”
Reflecting on the lessons learned from her experiences, Bayo emphasized her refusal to settle for mediocrity. She believes in continually striving for improvement and never becoming complacent. “I don’t stop at any level of mediocrity; I always feel I can do better, regardless of my current position. I’m not comfortable remaining stagnant; I always aim to achieve more.”
Addressing misconceptions about the Yoruba film industry, Bayo corrected the notion that it is predominantly filled with uneducated individuals. She acknowledged that while there were indeed many less educated actors in the past, there has always been a significant number of educated professionals in the industry. She noted, “There have always been educated people in the industry. The perception that it is dominated by illiterates likely stems from the presence of more less-educated individuals in earlier times. Many actors with just school certificates were still proficient in English.”
Bayo herself has made strides in education beyond her acting career. In December of the previous year, she was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy in Christian Leadership and Business from Georgia University. She celebrated this achievement on Instagram, expressing gratitude to the university and reintroducing herself with the new academic honor.
