Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed strong support for the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which began on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.
In a statement, Mrs. Tinubu described gender-based violence as one of the most widespread human rights violations, noting that nearly one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. In Nigeria, she highlighted the persistence of harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation, often justified by cultural or religious norms.
“Despite remarkable progress, many women and girls, particularly in rural and underserved areas, remain trapped in cycles of violence and inequality,” she stated.
The First Lady emphasized the importance of formal education for the girl child as a pathway to empowerment and making informed decisions. She called for collective action across all sectors of society, including timely prosecution of offenders, increased support for survivors, and creating safer environments for women and girls.
“As we observe these 16 days of activism, I urge us to challenge harmful behaviors. Together, we can build a society where everyone, regardless of gender, lives free from violence,” she urged.
Mrs. Tinubu’s remarks underline her commitment to addressing the root causes of gender-based violence and fostering a safer society for all.
