A severe flood in Borno State has led to the loss of over 80% of the animal population at Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo. The disaster has caused significant damage, with deadly animals such as crocodiles and snakes being washed into surrounding communities.
The floods, which have severely impacted Maiduguri, the state capital, have affected essential infrastructure, leading to the relocation of thousands of residents. Facilities including a teaching hospital and post office have been damaged by the torrential rains and the overflow of a dam.
In response, President Bola Tinubu has urged residents to evacuate the most affected areas and extended his condolences to the state’s government and residents. His office has also committed to addressing the humanitarian needs arising from the disaster.
This tragedy follows last month’s floods in the region, which claimed at least 49 lives and compounded the challenges faced by Borno State, already struggling with ongoing insurgency issues.
