Alhassan Yahaya, the former National Deputy President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has emerged as the union’s new National President. Yahaya secured a landslide victory with 436 votes, defeating Dele Atunbi, the outgoing National Treasurer, who garnered 97 votes, and Garba Muhammad, who received 39 votes.
The election, which took place in Owerri, Imo State, saw the participation of 602 delegates from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory. The newly elected leadership will oversee the union’s affairs for the next three years.
Yahaya’s presidency marks the beginning of a fresh era for the NUJ, with expectations of advancing journalists’ welfare and upholding journalistic ethics and professionalism.
Outgoing NUJ President, Comrade Christopher Isiguzo, pledged a seamless transition, assuring that the new administration would operate without interference.
This leadership change sets the stage for renewed efforts to strengthen the union and the practice of journalism across the country.
