Several residents of Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area, Abia State, who were hospitalized after consuming drugs from a medical outreach, have regained consciousness and recovered. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, initially left more than 50 individuals in varying states of health crises.
The swift response from the Abia State Government, Ohafia Local Government officials, Abiriba community leaders, and dedicated medical personnel contributed to the victims’ recovery. Hospitals in Abiriba, Umunneato, and Umuahia confirmed that many patients have been discharged after stabilization, though some are still undergoing treatment for severe conditions.
Preliminary investigations by the Abia State Ministry of Health suggest that the victims suffered adverse reactions to medications distributed during the outreach, which was organized without the ministry’s authorization. In response, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Uche, emphasized the risks of unapproved medical activities.
In an official statement, the health ministry reiterated that all medical outreaches in the state must receive prior approval to prevent similar incidents. Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, also warned that organizing unauthorized medical outreaches is now considered an offense, though he did not disclose whether disciplinary measures have been taken against the organizers.
The Abia State government continues to monitor the situation while urging residents to exercise caution and verify the credibility of health initiatives in their communities.
