The death toll from the tragic boat mishap in Niger State has risen to 42, following the recovery of six more bodies by rescue teams. Abdullahi Arah, Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the latest figures, revealing that the bodies were found between 6:00 PM on Thursday and 9:00 AM on Friday.
The boat, carrying about 300 passengers heading for a Mawlid Celebration in Gbajibo, Mokwa Local Government Area, capsized shortly before reaching its destination. Rescue operations by NSEMA and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) are ongoing as they work to locate more victims.
Earlier reports indicated that the boat was overcrowded, contributing to the tragic incident. Authorities have continued to search the waters for any remaining survivors or bodies.
