In a show of solidarity, young men and women under the banner of Adamawa Concerned Youths took to the streets of Yola on Tuesday to celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day, despite the state government’s abrupt cancellation of planned festivities.
The government had originally organized events, including cultural performances and school marches at Mahmud Ribadu Square, but these were scrapped following a security meeting led by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri on the eve of the celebrations. The decision was made citing security concerns.
In response, the Adamawa Concerned Youths group staged a vibrant street walk, asserting that there is much for Nigerians to celebrate, particularly regarding progress made since independence. Convener Yakubu Umar Girei praised the efforts of incumbent President Bola Tinubu, stating that his administration’s fiscal reforms are driving economic resurgence and enhancing social welfare across various sectors.
“While the effects of some policies are visible, there are also critical successes that contribute significantly to Nigeria’s socio-economic revival,” Girei remarked. He emphasized that the nation has witnessed notable infrastructural and social developments, particularly in roads and educational institutions, since gaining independence in 1960, all of which are worthy of celebration.
