The Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, was abuzz with excitement on Tuesday as the 2024 National Youth Games (NYG) showcased thrilling performances in the 200m and 4×100m relay finals. Athletes from Delta and Anambra States stole the spotlight, each claiming top honors in these key events.
In the girls’ 200m final, Anambra’s Chigozie Nwankwo continued her impressive form from the 100m, clinching her second title of the games with a personal best time of 24.71 seconds. Nwankwo led an Anambra 1-2 finish, with teammate Adaeze Ezeh securing the silver in 25.02 seconds. Delta’s Ngozi Okereke took bronze with a time of 25.25 seconds.
The Anambra team, with Nwankwo and Ezeh in the lineup, successfully defended their title in the girls’ 4×100m relay. The team finished first with a time of 48.21 seconds, marking their second consecutive gold in the event. Edo State followed with a time of 48.82 seconds, and Ogun State came third in 48.90 seconds.
In the boys’ 200m final, Delta’s Bright Gift delivered a standout performance, winning the gold with a time of 22.35 seconds. Ogun State’s Muyideen Adeola claimed the silver in 22.83 seconds, while Perfect Faye of an unnamed state finished third in 23.07 seconds.
Delta also excelled in the boys’ 4×100m relay, securing the gold medal with a time of 43.30 seconds. Bayelsa State took second place with 43.71 seconds, and Ondo State earned the bronze with a time of 43.92 seconds.
The day’s events highlighted the competitive spirit and talent present at this year’s National Youth Games, with Delta and Anambra showcasing their strength across multiple athletic disciplines.
