Bread, a fundamental part of many Nigerian diets, is increasingly becoming an unaffordable luxury. Recent months have seen a dramatic rise in bread prices, driven by escalating costs of flour, yeast, sugar, energy, and other essential ingredients.
Just three months ago, a loaf of bread cost around N1,500. Today, that same loaf now sells for N1,800. The price of a loaf that was N1,800 has surged to N2,000, while one that was N2,000 has increased to N2,300. Even more affordable options like Boku bread from Boku Mart have risen from N1,100 to N1,300 per loaf.
Suliat Abdulrahman, Sales Representative at Rich O Bakery, indicated that the ongoing rise in ingredient costs suggests further price hikes are imminent. Similarly, Kayode Akinidowu, manager of Dacharis Bakery, warned that the current bread prices may not hold if the costs of baking materials continue to climb.
Abdulrahman detailed the impact of rising costs on her business: “Three months ago, we sold a loaf for N800, but it’s now N900 due to increased production costs. Flour prices have jumped from N55,000 to N72,000 per 50kg bag, sugar from N70,000 to N80,000, and yeast from N20,000 to N43,000. We now buy fewer bags of flour at a time due to these soaring costs.”
The price hikes have led to reduced sales volumes, Abdulrahman noted. She called for government intervention to control the prices of key baking ingredients like flour and sugar, arguing that the current trends are forcing many bakers out of business.
Akinidowu echoed these concerns, pointing out that rising ingredient costs have not only driven up bread prices but also reduced loaf sizes. For example, a loaf that was priced at N400 three months ago is now N700, while a N200 loaf has risen to N300, and a N100 loaf now costs N200.
The impact extends beyond bread bakers. Mrs. Nkoli Onyemuche, a snacks maker, reported similar challenges, with increasing ingredient prices forcing her to reduce the sizes of her products like buns, meat pies, and doughnuts.
Consumers are also feeling the pinch. Mr. Chucks Onwuegbu lamented the soaring bread prices, expressing concern about whether he can continue to include bread in his family’s diet regularly.
The persistent rise in bread prices highlights the broader economic pressures facing Nigerian consumers and businesses alike, underscoring the urgent need for effective measures to stabilize costs and support the baking industry.
