The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, advises driver Oyiga Michael, who violated traffic rules while relying on Google Maps, to face legal consequences rather than seeking sympathy on social media.
Michael, who reported his arrest at Ijesha on social media, claimed he was following the directions of Google Maps, leading him into a one-way route. Despite explaining the situation to the police, he was detained briefly, and his car was impounded at Cele Police Station. The police allegedly demanded a bribe of N30,000 for the release of his vehicle.
In response, Hundeyin states, “Ignorance is not an excuse under the law. Google Maps is equally not an excuse. Stay calm and let the law take its course.” He emphasizes that the police enforce laws but are not responsible for road signs.
Addressing the bribery allegation, Hundeyin asserts, “They must not pay the bribe. It is an offence to give a bribe. It is, however, very okay to pay a fine. And that would be in court, not a police station.”
Michael acknowledges the mistake and expresses a lesson learned. He prays for leniency, stating, “It won’t happen again as we understand perfectly how to navigate road junctions and use lanes on maps.”
On Sunday morning, he updates that he is unharmed, not detained, and his car remains at the station. He plans to return on Monday, hoping for forgiveness and the release of his vehicle.
