Women will overthrow Iran’s Islamic republic: Nobel laureate

-

Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has declared that women will ultimately overthrow Iran’s Islamic system, even if the regime survives a potential military conflict.

In a video message shared on International Women’s Day, Mohammadi, currently on temporary release from prison for health reasons, reaffirmed her stance against Iran’s strict gender policies.

“Women have risen up against the Islamic republic in such a way that the regime no longer has the power to suppress them,” she said.

A longtime human rights activist, Mohammadi has spent much of the past decade behind bars. She was a vocal supporter of the 2022-2023 protests that erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman arrested for allegedly violating Iran’s strict dress code.

Without wearing a headscarf, Mohammadi warned:

“If the Islamic republic survives any war, it will not survive resistance from women.”

She also condemned “gender apartheid” in Iran and paid tribute to three women sentenced to death for their roles in anti-regime protests.

Since winning the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, Mohammadi has continued to challenge Iranian authorities, despite the risk of being sent back to prison at any time.
