Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has opened up about his decision to represent Nigeria instead of the Netherlands, where he was born. The Al-Kholood defender shared on the *Sports Afterparty Podcast* that a pivotal call from the late Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi and the immediate opportunity for international football at 21 swayed his choice.
Having previously played for the Dutch U19 and U20 teams, Troost-Ekong was initially on the path to represent the Netherlands. However, Nigeria’s need for young defensive talent and the chance for a prominent role with the Super Eagles at the time made the decision easier for him. Since his debut a decade ago, Troost-Ekong has become a key player and assumed the interim captaincy in 2021.
As Nigeria prepares to face Benin Republic in a crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier, Troost-Ekong emphasized the importance of the match despite Nigeria needing only a point to secure qualification.
