Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has called on Nigerian leaders to embrace the leadership principles of Michael Okpara, emphasizing that this approach, which prioritizes selfless service, agriculture, and industrialization, could lead to greater prosperity and improved governance across the nation.
Speaking at the Michael Okpara Leadership Prize awards in Abuja yesterday, Uzodimma highlighted how Okpara’s leadership transformed the Eastern Region into Africa’s fastest-growing economy. Delivering his address on the topic, “Service Above Self: Lessons from the Leadership Philosophy of Dr. Michael Okpara,” the governor stressed that if contemporary political leaders adopted Okpara’s virtues—selflessness, integrity, vision, and inclusivity—the country would be in a much better state.
Uzodimma, who was also honored with the Premier’s Grand Prize, Gold Plaque Category, encouraged Nigerians to prioritize selfless service over personal gain. He urged a collective commitment to national development, suggesting that true progress would come from the citizens’ patriotism, reminiscent of the late Premier’s dedication.
He also commended the ongoing efforts to preserve Okpara’s legacy through the lecture series, but lamented that Okpara has not received the national recognition he deserves. “In my view, Okpara remains an unsung hero in Nigeria,” Uzodimma stated.
Cross River Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, also paid tribute to Okpara, calling him a personal hero and noting that many of the agricultural policies in Cross River State are inspired by Okpara’s achievements.
The event was chaired by former Senate President, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, who praised both the organizers for keeping Okpara’s memory alive and Governor Uzodimma for his insightful lecture.
The ceremony drew an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including Bauchi State Governor Senator Bala Mohammed, the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, former Cross River Governor Sir Clement Ebri, industrialist Chief Arthur Eze, along with other prominent political figures and traditional rulers.
