Prof. Bernard Odoh, the Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Awka, Anambra State, has called on aggrieved members of the university community to join him in advancing the institution. This plea comes amid ongoing protests and disagreements surrounding his appointment as vice-chancellor.
Odoh, a professor of Applied Geophysics, was appointed to the position about a month ago after a competitive interview process conducted by the university’s governing council. His appointment, however, has sparked protests, particularly from members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who have raised concerns about his qualifications and ascension to the professor rank.
During a press conference on Friday in Awka, Odoh emphasized the need for peace and unity, stating that meaningful development cannot occur without it. He called on those opposing his leadership to work together for the greater good of the university.
Charles Otu, Odoh’s Personal Assistant on Media, clarified that the allegations against the vice-chancellor were unfounded. He noted that Odoh emerged as the top candidate in the race for the seventh substantive vice-chancellor, with a score of 90 points. A National Industrial Court in Awka had also validated the Governing Council’s scoring templates, ensuring fair hearing for all parties involved.
Otu also highlighted Odoh’s distinguished academic background, including his Bachelor’s in Geological Sciences (1999), Master’s in Applied Geophysics, and Doctorate in Applied Geophysics from NAU, along with his experience as a visiting professor and full professor of Applied Geophysics.
Otu urged the media to verify facts before publishing, describing Odoh as a pragmatic and ambitious leader with a clear blueprint for the university’s development over the next five years.
