The Federal Government has initiated the deployment of consular officers to various diplomatic missions globally in preparation for the expected release of a new ambassadorial list. This development comes over a year after the recall of 83 ambassadors in September 2023.
The recall, which followed President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration, marked a reevaluation of Nigeria’s foreign policy. The ambassadors, both career and non-career, were ordered to return by October 31, 2023. However, replacements have yet to be named, leaving many missions without substantive leadership.
In the interim, 12 consuls-general and five chargés d’affaires were appointed in April 2024 to manage day-to-day operations. While these officials can handle administrative duties, they lack the authority to engage in high-level diplomatic negotiations or represent Nigeria at the highest levels.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, cited funding constraints as a primary reason for the delay. A senior official in the ministry also expressed concerns about the lack of communication, noting that the prolonged absence of ambassadors could harm Nigeria’s reputation and diplomatic relations.
Some diplomats fear the delay might be perceived as instability by international partners, potentially affecting foreign investments and collaborations. Former diplomats and foreign policy experts have called for urgent reforms, highlighting the need for dedicated funding for diplomatic missions and streamlined appointment processes.
The opposition parties have criticized the delay. The PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, described the situation as a sign of administrative inefficiency, while the Labour Party National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, noted the implications for Nigeria’s global standing and foreign investment efforts.
As consular officers take up positions in countries like Malaysia, Spain, and Brazil, there are growing calls for President Tinubu’s administration to prioritize the appointment of ambassadors and reinvigorate Nigeria’s foreign policy direction.
