Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has urged increased inclusion and support for individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as the world marks Autism Awareness Day.
In a special message on Wednesday, Tinubu expressed her joy in celebrating the unique skills and potential of people with ASD. She emphasized the significance of this year’s theme, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” as a call to action for greater awareness and inclusivity.
“This year’s theme reminds us that being considerate of people living with autism is not just a moral responsibility but a vital pillar of sustainable development,” she stated.
She highlighted the challenges autistic individuals face, including discrimination in education, healthcare, employment, and social integration. Tinubu encouraged Nigerians to foster an inclusive society, aligning with SDG 4 (quality education) and SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth).
The First Lady also appealed for an end to discrimination, stressing the importance of peaceful coexistence and equal opportunities.
“On this special day, I encourage all Nigerians to embrace neurodiversity, advocate for inclusion, and work together to create a society where every individual has the opportunity to excel,” she said.
In related efforts, stakeholders in the humanitarian sector reaffirmed their commitment to supporting individuals with autism. At a recent forum in Abuja, organized by the House Committee on Disability Matters, leaders pledged to improve access to education, healthcare, and other essential services for persons with disabilities.
Mrs. Victoria Jim, Chairperson of the Sustainable Development for African Youth Initiative (SUDAYI), reiterated her organization’s dedication to bridging gaps in autism services and ensuring affected individuals and their families receive necessary support.
World Autism Awareness Day, observed annually on April 2, serves as a platform to promote understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity worldwide.
