Protests erupted at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, intensifying tensions just days before the Local Government election set for October 5, 2024.
Large crowds gathered at the party’s headquarters, prompting security forces to intervene to control the situation and alleviate traffic congestion in the area, according to reports from Channels Television.
The unrest stems from escalating concerns regarding the delayed release of the 2023 Voters’ Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
A recent court ruling by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, delivered on September 30, 2024, prohibited INEC from providing the voters’ register to RSIEC amidst ongoing legal disputes.
Despite the court’s decision, Governor Siminalayi Fubara asserted that the election will proceed as scheduled. He emphasized his belief that a previous Supreme Court ruling mandating the election of local government executives across all states supports his stance.
