Rwanda Coach Spittler Reflects on Emotional Win Over Super Eagles

-

Rwanda’s head coach, Torsten Spittler, has expressed mixed emotions following his team’s historic 2-1 victory against Nigeria in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier. While proud of the achievement, he lamented that the win was not enough to secure Rwanda’s place in next year’s tournament.

Match Recap

– Result: Rwanda 2-1 Nigeria
– Venue: Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo

– Goals:
– Samuel Chukwueze (Nigeria, 59′)
– Jimmy Mutsinzi (Rwanda)
– Innocent Nshuti (Rwanda)

Rwanda’s victory marked their first-ever win over the Super Eagles, defying expectations given their significantly lower FIFA ranking.

Spittler praised his players for their resilience but couldn’t hide his disappointment at missing AFCON qualification.

“Check the FIFA rankings. The Super Eagles are ranked around 30th, while we, Rwanda, are somewhere in the 160s. That’s a huge gap. Yet, we stood our ground and achieved this feat,” he said.

Despite the landmark win, Spittler described the failure to qualify as deeply upsetting.

“It feels unacceptable that we could beat a team like Nigeria in such a competition and still fail to qualify for the AFCON. We came so close but remained so far away,” he added.

The victory underscores Rwanda’s potential and offers a morale boost despite the disappointment. It also highlights areas for improvement as the team builds toward future tournaments.
