Several Caretaker Committee Chairmen in Rivers State loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Action People’s Party (APP), ahead of the October 5 local government elections. This move has fueled ongoing speculations of Fubara’s possible exit from the PDP, following a political rift with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who allegedly controls the state PDP structure.
While Governor Fubara recently reaffirmed his commitment to the PDP during a meeting with the party’s Board of Trustees, some of his allies have already transitioned to the APP. Many of the candidates for the upcoming local government elections are now running under the APP banner.
Ezebunwo Ichemati, Caretaker Chairman of Port Harcourt City Council, is among those campaigning for a chairmanship position under the APP. His campaign materials, featuring the APP logo, have been spotted across the city. Ichemati has promised to provide credible leadership and run a positive campaign if elected.
Similarly, Marvin Yobana, CTC Chairman of Khana LGA, has announced his defection to the APP. Yobana, who was not supported by Fubara for the PDP ticket, introduced Martins Ibibo as the APP candidate for Khana LGA.
The Rivers State APP Chairman, Sunny Wokekoro, announced the commencement of senatorial campaigns, starting with Rivers South-East Senatorial District. He expressed confidence in the APP’s ability to change the governance landscape in Rivers State.
