The Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the release of 10 minors who were detained during a recent protest in the state.
DSP Ramhan Nansel, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, shared the update in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Lafia.
According to reports, 50 protesters were arrested on August 1 in four different Local Government Areas during the first day of the protest, which saw clashes with police and incidents of looting.
Out of the 50 arrested, 25 were from Lafia, 16 from Karu, six from Keffi, and three from Mararaba Udege in Nasarawa Local Government Area.
Nansel stated that “10 minors out of the 50 protesters were released to their parents and guardians,” while the remaining 40 have been charged in court.
The police spokesperson encouraged the public to continue their daily activities without fear of intimidation.
The nationwide protest on August 1 highlighted widespread public dissatisfaction with the country’s economic and social conditions. Demonstrators across Nigeria demanded reforms and increased accountability.
President Bola Tinubu previously called for patience regarding his policies, urging citizens not to allow the unrest to be exploited by criminal elements.
The protest emphasized the public’s call for change and the importance of peaceful and constructive dialogue.
