The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Professionals Support Movement has urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene in what they describe as the harassment of opposition leaders in Northern Nigeria by the Minister of State for Defense, Mohammed Bello Matawalle. According to the group’s Chairman, Dr. Muazzam Lawal Sadauki, there have been efforts to implicate PDP leaders in the North, particularly in the Northwest, through accusations related to Bashir Hadejia, who is currently in detention.
Sadauki expressed concern that Matawalle, the former Zamfara State governor, is targeting opposition figures who are perceived as threats to President Tinubu’s political future. He accused Matawalle of persecuting prominent PDP leaders, including retired General Aliyu Gusau and former governors Attahiru Bafarawa and Sule Lamido, due to their opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The PDP group called on President Tinubu to instruct Matawalle and others to focus on their official duties rather than using their positions to suppress political opposition, emphasizing that governance should prioritize the welfare of the people rather than political vendettas.
