Over 500 members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ifedayo Local Government Area, Osun State, have defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The defection, which took place on Monday, December 16, 2024, signals a growing shift in political allegiance as local government elections approach in February 2025.
The defectors were welcomed by PDP State Chairman, Sunday Bisi, who credited the achievements of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration for the growing momentum. He expressed confidence that the PDP would secure a decisive victory in the upcoming elections, effectively diminishing the APC’s presence in the state.
Bisi assured the defectors of inclusion and opportunities within the PDP, stating:
“In PDP, we don’t discriminate. Let’s join hands with those you met to move the party forward. Come February 2025, PDP will coast to victory at the polls.”
He also dismissed any chances of election rigging, emphasizing the PDP’s preparedness to counter any such attempts.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Goke Folayan criticized the APC’s neglect of Ifedayo during its 12-year tenure and praised Governor Adeleke’s proactive governance, including the reconstruction of the Ora-Igbomina water scheme.
“Our decision to join the PDP is to support the Governor’s development strides and ensure progress for our local government,” Folayan stated.
The event concluded with the presentation of PDP flags to the party’s chairmanship, vice-chairmanship, and councillorship candidates for the local elections.
The mass defection highlights the growing influence of the PDP in Osun and sets the stage for a heated contest in the forthcoming elections.
