In preparation for the upcoming Ondo State governorship election, participating political parties will sign a Peace Accord on November 8. The National Peace Committee, in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is coordinating this initiative to ensure a peaceful election process.
Announcing the development in Abuja, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu noted that the Commission has pinpointed potential flashpoints in Ondo State and has alerted security agencies to conduct effective conflict mapping.
During the fourth quarterly meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Yakubu mentioned that INEC would conduct a final readiness assessment next week. This will involve key stakeholders, including election officials, security agencies, and transport providers, to ensure a seamless election day.
Yakubu also shared recent statistics on the Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) collection. Out of 89,777 cards available, 64,273 were collected, reflecting a 71.6% collection rate. He commended the CSOs for their role in mobilizing voters to collect their PVCs and announced that INEC would publish polling unit-level collection figures on its website.
The INEC chairman highlighted the Commission’s improvements in voter accreditation, result upload procedures, and media and observer accreditation processes, signaling a more efficient election administration this year.
