The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that Governor Dapo Abiodun and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are trying to prevent the PDP from participating in Saturday’s local government elections.
During a press briefing in Abeokuta on Wednesday, PDP Chairman Abayomi Tella accused the APC of resorting to tactics aimed at sidelining the opposition due to the growing popularity of PDP candidates. “The governor and APC have observed the overwhelming popularity of our candidates and are scheming to block us from participating by any means possible,” Tella asserted.
The allegations come amid a lawsuit filed by former PDP state chairman, Sikirullahi Ogundele, which questions the eligibility of PDP candidates, claiming they are not recognized members. Tella suggested the lawsuit is part of a broader scheme orchestrated by the state government to destabilize the party.
Tella also raised concerns about the impartiality of Justice Sunday Adeniyi, the judge assigned to the case, noting his past affiliations with the APC. Despite this, he expressed confidence in the judiciary but urged transparency in the election process, calling on the Ogun State Independent Electoral Commission (OGSIEC) to ensure timely distribution of materials.
Responding to the accusations, Ogun APC Publicity Secretary Tunde Oladunjoye attributed the PDP’s claims to internal divisions, asserting that the APC has no involvement in the PDP’s ongoing factional issues. Ogundele also denied being influenced by the government, dismissing the allegations as “cheap lies.”
The case is set for a hearing on Thursday, just ahead of the local government elections.
