The Ogun State government has announced plans to establish cocoa enclaves in its three senatorial districts, aiming to enhance cocoa production and adopt sustainable agricultural practices.
Bolu Owotomo, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, revealed the initiative during a visit to stakeholders in the produce supply chain at Ogbere and Area J4 in Ijebu East Local Government Area. He emphasized that cocoa plays a vital role in supporting livelihoods and driving the state’s economy, offering opportunities for millions globally.
Owotomo highlighted the need for sustainable agriculture through initiatives addressing deforestation, restoring degraded lands, and promoting agroforestry. He also stressed the importance of environmental protection to ensure the future of cocoa production and its contribution to combating climate change.
The government has commenced the production of improved seedlings for cocoa, cashew, and other cash crops, slated for distribution next year. Owotomo also disclosed plans to purchase tractors and farming equipment to support agricultural activities.
He announced the Ministry’s commitment to holding quarterly meetings with the leadership of the produce supply chain to address challenges and provide lasting solutions.
Waliu Owode, Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture, assured farmers of continued government support to boost their production.
Additionally, the Director of Produce Services, Augustine Somade, urged stakeholders to collaborate with the government, stating that addressing the complexities of the cocoa supply chain requires collective effort.
Sesan Sowunmi, Chairman of the Cocoa Association of Nigeria (CAN), praised the government’s unwavering support for cocoa farmers and pledged to continue working with the administration to enhance the sector.
