The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has called on Edo State Governor-elect, Senator Monday Okpebholo, to prioritize the fulfillment of his campaign promises to the people of the state. The monarch made this appeal during a visit from Okpebholo and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, to the Benin Royal Palace.
Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, was declared the winner of the September 21, 2024, Edo governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), having secured 291,667 votes. His closest competitor, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 247,566 votes.
Oba Ewuare II expressed gratitude for the peaceful conduct of the election, attributing it to divine intervention. He emphasized that good governance begins with honoring campaign commitments and urged the governor-elect to remain dedicated to the people’s welfare.
“We thank God Almighty for the peaceful election. We also thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ensuring a peaceful process,” the monarch said. He added that the palace remains open to Okpebholo at any time for counsel or support.
Okpebholo, along with his deputy and a delegation of APC leaders including Senator Adams Oshiomhole and Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, presented their certificates of return to the Oba during the visit.
