The Senate has passed two bills that will establish the Federal University of Technology in Ilaro, Ogun State, and the Federal University of Allied Sciences in Kachia, Kaduna State. Both bills passed their third reading on Tuesday, following the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Tertiary Education and TETFUND.

According to Senator Dandutse Mohammed, who chairs the committee and represents Katsina South, the bill for the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro, proposes upgrading the current Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro, to a full-fledged university. This bill, sponsored by Senator Solomon Adeola of Ogun West, was first introduced during the 9th Senate but did not progress.

In addition, the Senate approved relocating the Federal University of Allied Sciences from Manchok to Kachia in Kaduna State, following a recommendation in the committee’s report. This bill was sponsored by Senator Sunday Katung, representing Kaduna South.

After a detailed clause-by-clause consideration, the Senate unanimously passed both bills. Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the sponsors, emphasizing that education is vital for national development.
