The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an “immediate reversal” of the recent hike in petrol pump prices across the country. This demand was made in a statement posted on their X account on Tuesday night.
The NLC’s call for action comes in response to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL)’s recent decision to raise petrol prices from ₦568 to ₦855 per litre, with prices reaching up to ₦897 in some locations. The union condemned the increase, expressing disappointment and feeling betrayed by President Bola Tinubu.
NLC President Joe Ajaero highlighted that the increase in fuel prices undermines previous agreements and expectations, noting that the acceptance of the ₦70,000 minimum wage was predicated on the assumption that fuel prices would remain stable.
Ajaero indicated that the NLC plans to take further action in response to the price hike. He stated that the Congress would soon convene to determine the appropriate steps to address the situation, promising that these actions would be communicated to the public in due course.
