Nigeria’s ability to fully benefit from the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) is being hindered by poor infrastructure, particularly in transportation, logistics, and energy. Despite being Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria faces significant challenges in maximizing the opportunities offered by AfCFTA, which aims to create a single market for goods and services across 54 African nations.
Key barriers include fragmented transportation networks, outdated ports, and insufficient energy supply. The World Bank ranks Nigeria 168th globally in terms of ease of trading across borders, highlighting the logistical inefficiencies that increase costs and delays. Over 50% of containers in Nigeria face significant delays, according to the Nigerian Ports Authority’s 2020 report.
Stakeholders have expressed concerns that the country’s inadequate infrastructure and reliance on road transport limit its ability to take advantage of the free trade agreement. Additionally, regulatory hurdles, inefficiencies, and a lack of coordination between government bodies have exacerbated Nigeria’s struggles.
Local industries are also not sufficiently developed to meet the demands of an open continental market, with the manufacturing sector showing a decline. While Nigeria remains dependent on oil exports, it faces difficulties in diversifying its industrial output and improving the competitiveness of non-oil products.
For Nigeria to fully capitalize on AfCFTA, urgent reforms are needed in infrastructure development, regulatory processes, and industrial capacity. Investments in transportation, energy, and logistics are critical to facilitating smoother trade across borders. Moreover, policies promoting export diversification, innovation, and technology would enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in the African market.
Political will and institutional strengthening are essential for effective implementation of AfCFTA in Nigeria. The government must address these challenges to position the country as a major player in the African trade landscape and unlock the potential of this transformative agreement.
