Nigeria has made a significant mark in the international fencing arena, with 16-year-old Inkosi Brou winning the country’s inaugural medal in the sabre category at the World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland.
Ranked No. 67 in the world, Brou secured a silver medal after a challenging match, ultimately falling 9-15 to Iceland’s Andre Mateev in the finals.
Starting as the fifth seed, Brou kicked off his tournament in the round of 16, defeating Germany’s Magnus De Witt 15-9. He then edged past Spain’s Oriol Farre with a close 15-13 victory in the quarterfinals. Brou faced his toughest challenge in the semifinals against the top seed, Cristofer Cortez from Ecuador, where he won in a thrilling 15-14 match to reach the finals.
Brou, the grandson of late former NAFDAC Director-General Dora Akunyili, expressed his excitement over his achievement and his aspirations for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
“Starting the fencing season with a silver medal at one of my first senior FIE competitions is a great achievement. I am proud to represent Nigeria and will continue to pursue my Olympic dream,” he shared with Nigeria Fencing Media.
He extended his gratitude to his coaches and supporters, including Akhi Spencer-El, Daryl Homer, Alex Fotiyev, and Tom Seitz.
Adeyinka Samuel, President of the Nigeria Fencing Federation, praised Brou’s accomplishment as a pivotal moment for the sport in Nigeria.
“We are excited about this progress, which aligns with our goals for the LA 2028 Olympics. Brou’s success is a source of inspiration for us, motivating our efforts to ensure a strong Nigerian presence at the upcoming Olympic Games,” Samuel stated.
