Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), emphasized the significance of Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging in modern communication at the Virtual Stakeholders’ Forum on the Draft A2P Licensing Framework held on December 20, 2024.
Represented by Mrs. Chizua Whyte, Ag. Head of Legal & Regulatory Services at NCC, Maida discussed the critical role A2P messaging plays in various sectors, particularly in business communication, government updates, and consumer services. He noted that A2P messaging supports socio-economic development by driving efficiency and enhancing communication across sectors such as banking, healthcare, and government.
Maida highlighted the importance of collaboration among key stakeholders—government, consumers, and industry players—to ensure the success of A2P messaging. He pointed out that while A2P messaging offers opportunities for innovation and growth, it faces challenges like fraud, consumer protection, data privacy concerns, and an imbalance in value distribution within the ecosystem. These issues threaten the sustainable development of the communication platform.
The NCC is committed to an inclusive regulatory approach, and Maida urged stakeholders to actively participate in refining the A2P licensing framework to address these challenges. He assured that the Commission is dedicated to fostering an environment that supports innovation, protects stakeholders, and drives fair competition in the A2P messaging space.
