In a recent interview with Channels TV, Shehu Musa Gabam, National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), expressed strong opinions on various national issues, including the judiciary’s role and the recent purchase of a presidential jet.
On Chief Justice Ariwoola:
Gabam commended outgoing Chief Justice Ariwoola for his contribution to financial autonomy for local governments, describing it as a significant patriotic act. However, he criticized the judiciary, asserting that it poses a major threat to Nigeria’s democracy. According to Gabam, the judiciary’s actions, including handling election cases, are undermining democratic processes. He highlighted the contradiction of having an independent electoral commission and a judiciary that can overturn election results, which he believes destabilizes the democratic system.
Gabam expressed hope that the incoming Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) will reform the judiciary, selecting credible and principled judges for sensitive cases. He criticized the outgoing CJN for failing to address corruption and improve judicial standards, contributing to public disillusionment with the justice system. Gabam stressed that restoring integrity to the judiciary is crucial for national stability and reducing insecurity.
On the Presidential Jet Purchase:
Gabam expressed disappointment with the government’s decision to purchase a new presidential aircraft. He criticized the move as insensitive given the current economic challenges and hardship faced by Nigerians. Gabam argued that maintaining and upgrading existing aircraft would have been a more prudent choice, rather than investing in a new jet.
He questioned the necessity of the new aircraft, especially when considering Nigeria’s economic difficulties and the potential for maintaining current assets. Gabam suggested that traveling on commercial airlines could be a viable option, noting that other world leaders, like the British Prime Minister, use commercial flights without compromising security.
