The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja has been left without power following the theft and vandalization of its electrical cables. The 60,000-seat stadium, which also houses the Ministry of Sports Development and a sub-station of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), has been experiencing electricity outages for some time.
An official from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) revealed that it will cost around 1 billion Naira to restore power to the stadium. The high cost is attributed to the need for imported replacement cables and materials, influenced by current exchange rates.
The stadium, originally built at a cost of N54 billion (approximately $360 million) in 2003, was refurbished by business mogul Aliko Dangote at a cost of $1 million in 2022.
