Ruben Amorim has been appointed as the new head coach of Manchester United, following the dismissal of Erik ten Hag. The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, who previously led Sporting Lisbon to two Primeira Liga titles, has signed a contract until 2027, with the option for an additional year, and is set to officially join the club on November 11, 2024.
In an official statement, Manchester United expressed excitement about Amorim’s appointment, highlighting him as one of the most promising young coaches in European football. The club noted his impressive track record, including winning Sporting’s first league title in 19 years.
Until Amorim’s arrival, Ruud van Nistelrooy will continue to manage the team, aiming to stabilize performance during the November international break. Amorim’s debut match will be against Ipswich on November 24.
The appointment comes after United’s poor start to the season, which saw them sitting 14th in the Premier League after just three wins in nine matches. Ten Hag’s departure followed a recent 2-1 defeat against West Ham.
Amorim quickly emerged as United’s top choice, with Sporting confirming that the club was prepared to meet his €10 million release clause. Despite speculation surrounding his move, Amorim maintained a focus on his current responsibilities at Sporting.
This transition marks another chapter in United’s quest to reclaim their status as a dominant force in English football, a position they have struggled to maintain since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
